So the hero has an evil character but he isn't a buffoon, that's refreshing I guess. I could imagine a different story where instead of sacrificing MC he sacrifices one of the other party members or even a story where he knows MC is OP and secretly assassinates MC's friends while trying to capture MC for his own party.

The evil hero is the most well-developed character in this story... MC is gonna have to step up his game.
