the flower makes sense. or as much sense as exorcism could

both from a spiritual sense, after all flowers have meanings, can be taken as sacred in some religions, etc,
and in a world with magic those are valid enough reasons,

and chemical...
well, assuming there is a medicine that can help exorcising people it could have a LOT of one of the chemical ingredients in the flower
just like peppers with caipsachin (birds are immune to it, most animals are not, we... are not but enjoy it?)
or the formic acid on nettle that makes us itchy.
