Well the main point is that you can launch better from them than flat ground, but over time they added electronics.So THAT'S what those things are for. I always wondered what was the point of the devices at those tracks at the starting line.
It's actually slightly worse than just "if you start before the gun":
1st, it's not even about starting, it's about generating force above a certain limit on the starting blocks. There have been a couple of instances of someone just jolting a bit, but not starting, which has triggered the system.
2nd, if you start running within a 100ms/1 tenth of a second after the start gun has gone off, you get a false start. It's been decided that you can't react faster than that, so it's a false start. I've seen many races where someone got disqualified for starting like 85 ms AFTER the gun.
