it seems to me that he views her a lot like people view Japanese idols in my experience? Like where its ingrained in idol culture there’s meant to be a certain distance between the idol and the fan and that there’s certain “boundaries” that “shouldn’t be crossed” by a fan

I mean, I do think it's valid to maintain a respectful distance from someone you're a big internet fan of. It's good for keeping parasocial relationships from becoming toxic. Or, at least, harmful.
