I think it was supposed to imply that it was going in the direction of lots of dark family stories: where the stepfather/mom’s boyfriend does R or S with the daughter, breaking up the family because the mom thought the daughter prompted it and wants to get rid of her. In order words, Ai's mom could have been just as despicable as her docudrama version.
