but why though?
if it's a traditional market haggling should be alright. afterall if there's no haggling then you'll give too much power to the merchant and the traditional marketplace advantage(cheap price) would be gone and people will just flock to supermarket.

i know tipping is not OK because it's condescending tho.(like if you want to tip, you have to put the money inbetween tissue paper and give it directly or something.)

Bargain and tip. They consider that the value is fair so it is not correct to bargain and tip.

Yeah, haggling is basically going "you are lying, these items are not worth that much!' So haggling with an honest owner is insulting.

The misnomer that haggling or bargaining is out of the question in Japan is right up there with tattoos being taboo and the Japanese diet consisting entirely of raw fish as the most oft repeated misconceptions about Japan. It understandably stems from the fact that in certain situations it is admittedly not an option, and certainly for most tourists haggling will be of little to no use, but when you live there for a while and find salesmen discounting their wares at an alarming rate when you are actually just not interested – the penny/yen drops.

Personal experience here, it's not like you can't haggle, but most of the time, you either now the owner or you're close enough with them to be considered as "friends". But most of the time, you can't or shouldn't, you'll just be considered as rude. You can ask nicely if you have some special circumstances (like you're only missing a few yens or something)

Well it makes sense that haggling is not okay in Japan in certain places. After all there is a lot of farmers that barely make any money. To haggling you need to live in the around for a long time and shop often to know the people and be on a friendly bases to make things cheaper. Sometimes you don’t need to haggle since they sometimes give it to you for free and it is pretty common to give something back. Like for example if a person you know give you ingredients it is best to cook food for them in the near future as a way to say thanks. So haggling is only listed for Businessmen that is making a deal, local people that live there, and food restaurants that needs ingredients.(often give discounts for suppliers for said ingredients to make a long-standing trust)
Haggling only applies if nobody is interested in buying the products because of expensive prices or they have too much products that would go to waste and lose profits from it.

Hmm... I thought the Japan's national diet consisted of washed-out geezers with dead fish eyes.
