If you're constantly used by people to get closer to someone else than you, it's understandable that you become a bit paranoid. It's similar to how someone with autism, who can't read the nonverbal signs without being pushed with the nose into them, feels: Not a nice feeling, especially not when you find out you fooled yourself...

It also seems that this girl is not following the crowd and running after the popular guy (his brother), which means: Bonus points for not being superficial and fangirling. A good starting point for any kind of relationship.
