I wouldn't consider that an overheard confession because nothing was 'heard', due to the fireworks. That's the Unheard Confession trope, also known as shitty writing.

His issue was not with Houjou soecifically, but that he thought all women interacted with him to get closer to his brother. He is gonna have interactions with other girls and still have the same confidence issues. There is more to the story and characters than the mains relationship.
