I've always worked jobs where it's pretty well understood that switching employers is one of the easiest ways to get a promotion and/or a pay bump, asking for people to serve as references or to provide letters of recommendation is a completely standard and prosaic social interaction, and there's really no requirement for leaving a job other than an informal two week notice that you're pursuing other opportunities.
As a result, this story about a dude being so anxious about performing a ritualized job quitting ceremony that he ends up seeking a paid service to do the deed for him is kind of baffling and (literally and figuratively) completely foreign to my experience. Like, there are stories about feudal Japanese peasants living in fear of being eaten by one-legged umbrella monsters that are more relatable than this.
