I'll be stale bread with you; I agree.

I find this arc of trying to push him to not only overtly see them romantically but also confess, to be boring in general. It doesn't play to the series' strong points.

Office supplies in Japan can also get expensive and really extra. Like "ooo here's a steel mechanical pencil that automatically adds lead when it senses paper." There's also like TON of collab supplies with cutsey characters. And yeah, we are talking about a nation that normalizes cram school. There's a lot of focus on memorization when studying too (so writing everything (like in contrast when I was in school I'd be told not to write everything and only the important parts and to not focus on memorizing as much) and tech adoption in classes is different (like for me by middle school everyone in class had personal iPads given by the school we'd type notes on). The idea of education isn't fundamentally different, but it's a different mindset entirely when it comes to students in school.
