So does this one start fluffy and wander into bare philosophical discourse like the elves + food one? While I don't mind philosophy, the transitions were a little heavy handed on the other one.

Subtlety is the name of the game in an entertainment medium. Like Top Gear (the old trio) teaching you about something through hyperbole. Unless your goal is just straight up making a chuuni, or on the other hand, purely philosophical art piece.
