You know, this reminds me of my uncle who stays in another city, every time a relative got back from there, he'll always send along a box of sweets because he thinks I like them. I don't, but the fact of having a family member that has you in their mind even when they don't entirely get you is still a precious thing. And I guess the mother in the story is in the same situation.
