I doubt that there are many Japanese that repressively carry genes for light hair with them. But for whatever reason not only does the child of a Japanese and blond person always get blond hair, but the child of that and a Japanese person too...

A bit of a mistranslation in this. (Perhaps to make it read more as natural English?) When asked if he has a girlfriend, he answers "No comment." in the raws. He neither confirms nor denies that he has one. It's only a small thing, but I think that nuance is important here.

If he did say "No comment" then it's a big difference with just "No"

@trapsarebetter reason: it's easier to design and people recognize them as foreigner in a Japanese setting faster. Imagine if their hair is black, the author will be having a hard time to explain they're having foreign parents.

I wanted to check for myself, because I suspected that a straight out denial would lead the story in one direction, whereas something more vague would lead in another.
