If Kei is crossdressing as a maid, I'd assume someone paid him 50,000 yen to do it.

Which is why I don't think he would do it. The cafe isn't supposed to have maids in the first place, after all, and Kei is hardly a delinquent.

I think Kei's gonna be in his Maid uniform.. so Yuuki can see the other peoples reactions.

I think he'd do it if it was to help his friends out.

then Yuuki has an excuse to join him so Kei "is not the only one"

@NagatoKaiNi How would that help their case when it's already established even having a naturally lighter hair colour will result in unkind remarks? Not to mention Yuuki's earlier experiences that resulted in dropping out of school. We would suddenly step into the Disney domain if Kei appearing in a maid dress made everybody magically super understanding and supportive. I'm sure some would be, some would just find it amusing but otherwise ignore it, but that'd always be the case. The real problem are the bullies and the holier-than-thou types we already saw commenting on Yuuki's hair colour. Why exactly would they change? They might still ignore Kei if Kei only made a joke out of it all and afterwards flexed his muscles, but if he tried to make a real societal/moral point, it shouldn't work.

@Kaarme yeah, you’ll need some suspension of disbelief for that. But not much...at the same time, Yuuki is laughed at because it’s the only one “different” or “strange”. Having another person that has those requirements could work, at least as a basis for future changes. Without forgetting that the girls will be supportive too.

@emMeBi86 I guess that could work to a point. Two people are harder to harass than one, as well. At the same time, however, I kind of feel like it would looking down on Yuuki. He knew what he would, likely, be facing by returning to school, yet he did it for his own sake and by gaining a lot of motivation from Mayu. Sure, it seems like the hair colour thing hit him pretty bad, but it's not like he couldn't have got over it. As long as the school doesn't say anything about it, just a couple of envious girls doesn't mean anything. He seemed to be doing pretty well with the other classmates. Sure, it is adapting himself to the atmosphere and norms of the school, but at the end of the day, most people need to adapt to various things to live their lives. Even rock musicians need to adapt to the ways music is sold and marketed, and laws need to be obeyd more or less, to actually make a living. Let alone office workers and whatnot. Always being accepted as your true self, as you really are, that's just fantasy. At the same time Yuuki has dashing looks and a cute girlfriend. His situation is worlds above what many are living with, even with his problems.

@Kaarme - The one thing that is different for Yuuki-kun this time that you can't forget is that their homeroom teacher is transgender, and already knows about Yuuki and Kei cross dressing at the cafe, and supports them.

Yuuki: Well there was a budget shortfall, and I wasn't sure what other kids in class would say...

Kei: Hold my Calpis, I got this.

@ChristineGuinn Kei especially is deserving of all the support: His original reason for crossdressing was to get closer to a girl he was interested in. What could be a more wholesome reason? Of course now he's only crossdressing because Yuuki would cry if he quit. He's making some money, but since he actually was ready to quit, I guess the salary isn't vital. Or maybe he was planning to seek another job with less risks. Who knows.

@Kaarme Salary isn't vital to Kei, but he would still seek another job just because he'd have free time.

@kurisu As I'm rereading the series, I couldn't help but notice that for most of the series Kei has sported three part-time jobs whenever he has had enough time for it! So, yeah, he most certainly would have picked another job to fill the time freed from being free from Cade Freedom. He once told Asuka he's saving money for his future just in case, but if you think about it, few students would have three part-time jobs if they really didn't need the money. One is already plenty when there are the school homework and studying for exams to consider. That's why it's likely the family is lacking income, with the mother dead and the dad being a truck driver. Driving trucks isn't the most highest paying job in the galaxy, tough as it may be. So, Kei is surely planning to wholly fund his own studies, making sure the younger siblings can have as much funds from the family as possible. So, I wouldn't actually say salary isn't vital for him. It just might be.
