Not the first time he's not at the same page as the rest so hardly surprising even if not intentional, although it would be amusing if he brought Yuki's uniform aswell.
Also, why would he dislike dressing like that? Clothes are just clothes, nothing more. Originally, different clothing were made for practical reasons that really don't apply anymore.
(People today don't move that much in ways where a skirt would be problematic, as for women and pants the modern ones are easy enough to put on/remove, a non-issue now.)

As for reality, what minorities have to put up with when alone is worlds apart from what they have to put up with when atleast two.
For that reason it's strongly recommended to never place someone with differences alone, with noone similar around them.
Well, also known mixing groups generally helps productivity, a truth that feminists love to bend like crazy for their lies.

@HYBRID_BEING I didn't believe in it, but if he can live with the consequences, it's his own business. You know, in this series there should be consequences, which was already indicated by the two bitches bitching about Yuuki's hair colour. Otherwise, what exactly was the point of Yuuki's suffering in the past? It would become a joke (though many things in life indeed do become a joke). Of course this can also go the Disney/Hollywood way of everything magically being okay.

Perhaps I should have expected it, but it's hard to say. This series has both realistic cruelty and unrealistic comedy and such.

To be fair, these are older (and different) kids. Possibly also city-kids compared to country-bumpkins (manga grandmas usually live somewhere in the country). So it might not be implausible that these can be convinced to different attitudes unlike the younger children.

Also, if they do it just for this event (and work) and play it off as something they do as a joke it'll be taken completely differently than if he does it day-by-day, undoubtedly. I know back in school we sometimes did reverse-gender stuff for shit and giggles (like plays, or just when hopelessly drunk, heh), and everyone thought it was good fun - but undoubtedly the attitude would have been very different if anyone had been "serious" about it. Well, that's my assumption anyway. ^^

I thought it just goes with the mood the series have. It does have realistic cruelty but at the same time all resolutions to dramas are simple and make, as you said, everything magically being okay. It's hardly deep on sensitive matters.

@HYBRID_BEING I don't know about that. What simple resolutions have we had? It seems to me the only simple thing in this manga has been the Yuuki+Mayu pairing. And that's only by forgetting Kei who went through a whole lot for basically nothing. Asuka as well tried after being 100% passive for a long time, but in the end she cut her hair and returned back to the square one after receiving an answer that wasn't an answer. Yuuki returned to school, realising that's where a kid belongs, but despite trying his best to fit in, after his own fashion, the ugly ghosts of the old came back haunting.

@Pyoro I'd otherwise agree with you, but it just isn't like that. Just the natural hair colour already caused problems. It's so stupid that if it hadn't happened in RL, I doubt any author could even come up with it. Yet it did, revealing how things are in Japan.

@Kaarme Sure, the hair color thing is real, but if we argue actual Japan - it's not such a simple issue as that crossdressing is seen as an escalation of flashy hair colors, it's just a different question altogether. Light hair is generally not regarded well, and people do dye it (especially when job hunting), but for a country so friggin' conservative Japan is surprisingly somewhat tolerant of crossdressing. It's perfectly possible for people to have an issue with one and not the other, ridiculous as this sounds. ^^;

So I don't think we can draw too many conclusions from this yet. We don't know the school policy on uniforms, we don't know how the teachers would react (but there seem to be at least two sympathetic ones around) and so on. It could go many ways.
I expect it'll do something relatively simple since that's in line with how the manga developed so far, but who knows how it'll look exactly ...
