Remember that he was bullied constantly for pretty much the last two years of middle school. At first it was just for having been suckered into being the piggy bank for his "friends" but it went on to anything and everything about him to the point that his parents thought it best to send him to a different prefecture for high school. It's not surprising that something like this was used against him as well.

I think this is retroactively the first point in continuity where Mahiru got a glimpse of what Amane dealt with back then and why he wound up the way he did and her response was likely key in him eventually trusting her with the whole thing.
