an interesting, but pretty cliche twist. they dont really have a reason to fight Otr since they both want the same thing, and Otr seem willing to help them defeat the evil god

Glaciers and volcanoes? Very clearly talking about the planes of primordial fire and ice, Muspelheim (fire) and Niflheim (ice). They're on opposite sides of Ginnungagap, the primordial void. Of course, this mamga takes some heavy liberties with norse mythology, so my comment is mere conjecture in the grand scheme of the story.

"We tried to ask humans for help, but they said no, so I put together the Asshole Rapist Squad to rape all the assholes across the land because actually we're trying to save the world and that requires that we fight a pointless war and send a bunch of psychopath monsters after innocent people who have nothing to do with any of this. This is all necessary so we can stop the real bad guy."

I get what he's going for, but only the Swordsman was shown to be remorseful about his duty as a warrior... and even then, why torture and torment the Dwarves? Why try to extinguish their Spirit guardian? Why destroy their tools and forges? This needed to be set up a very different way.

This reveal feels like a bit of a cop-out to me.

Otr spent the entire story trying to understand why people choose to fight and do horrible things, as he fights against said people who do horrible things. Then the Ice King explains that these people were actually trying to do good things all along?

I get the feeling that this reveal would make much more sense both plot-wise and thematically had Kawaguchi-sensei actually gotten the opportunity to develop Otr at their own pace instead of constantly rushed pacing, which makes all the exposition and fights feel less significant. What a shame.
