The determining factor of what a shield is "made" of is the front. Hardened leather would be doing better than wood against a sword. A small metal shield would mostly be wood too, but you don't call it a wooden shield

Should be the other way around:

Since he's talking about how every one of his 101 fights in his life have all led to the same outcome, of him going back to his cell as a slave, then being forced to fight in the arena again. Except when he says it here, it's the lead up to his Cool Guy moment of the chapter, because it's a fight that will lead to a different outcome: him escaping slavery.

I can't help but ear the Conan soundtrack at the end of the chapter.
The premise is kind of similar. A boy raised as a slave gladiator and basically unaware of common sense. Kill and survive or get killed. No alternatives.
