I'm sorta confused about the "you worked hard" vs "thank you" part that Suzy had a problem with, can anyone explain that to me?

@8roku, hi! So, when I was translating this, I think it's a bit ambiguous even in Korean. I think it can be up for interpretation, but the way I saw it was that the department head was talking about the school in a more 'personal' tone. He said things like 'thank you for saving OUR student' instead of 'you worked hard'. Therefore, Suzy was reflecting on how it was more of like human-to-human interaction instead of just her duty or job. If this comes up again, of course this meaning could change.

"You worked hard" has a sort of impersonal connotation that what she did was just a part of her job and expected--which is true to an extent, but it also erases the humanity of what she did. On the other hand, "Thank you for saving our student" creates a personal connection between the student and the school. She didn't just do a good job because she did her duty, but because she saved someone who is important to the school. I hope that helped clear things up a little.

AHH okay that makes a little more sense, but isn't she more upset that they gave her a more "personal" thank you? I'm trying to find why she isn't happy with that. Is it because she wants them to see the act more as she's competent with her job as a teacher vs because she's just a nice person?

Or it could be I totally interpreted her look wrong.

That confused me too tbh. Thinking it over and rereading it, I think I may have been interpreting it wrong after all.
Now I think that she was actually upset because the principal unintentionally put up a wall between the school and her with his words. He thanks her for saving "their" student--their's, excluding her. If they had said "good job", then that would be including her into the school and acknowledging that she is a part of them and their duty to protect "their" kids. So I think she feels that she hasn't been completely accepted as a part of the school's staff yet.
This line can be interpreted in a few ways so it's kind of confusing, but I think I got it right this time. 😅
