One of the things that I like that I learned about Heian period is how exorcists were basically the doctors of the period and even though a lot of their practices were based on superstition, they actually got many things right, be it by accident or actual deduction. For example, they understood the principle of diseases being transmitted through contact with bodily fluids as said in this chapter. Though they used "spirits" instead of "germs" they deduced quite a bit about how they worked considering the limited advances of medecine at the time.
