So the other alchemists didn't figure out that they can take care of their plants to have them be better quality? Uh, wow?
It seems that this country is underdeveloped in alchemy. Which is why better bread is unknown even to high-ranking aristocrats, but it's written right there in the textbook. I guess the king imported the textbook from foreign lands.
With no appraisal-sensei to guide development, hard-won knowledge would need to be preserved from generation to generation. But the line was broken. Maybe forces of evil attacked a congress of alchemists, killing all the best alchemists of the kingdom?

Would have been better if he was a loli, then we would have double the lolis.
"father, I want to be able to trust my assistant/employee and know that he won't prioritize your orders over mine, or otherwise spy on me for you. I want a pawn of my own"
"admirable, but as a parent I want to control your life and know everything that happens. And have the ability to at any time pull your independence from out under you as an option for disciplinary actions or to ensure you can't ever disobey me. Even as you grow up into an adolescent or even a major. Think of it as a future investment of mine, and don't concern yourself with preserving your own agency."
"Father, i want to hire a boy"
"You are literally six, let me handle it as your father"
Fatherless behavior.

Daisy's appraisal seems pretty abnormal with its comments on things.
later on it can even read the 'emotion' of objects.

like when she's learning using fusing metals with alchemy, her appraisal show comments from the metals themselves
"Hmm. The wind is troubled today."

What's up with this world? Alchemists are apparently looked down upon for their mediocre and useless potions, and yet the country buys them on mass and wants them desperately? Nobody knows how to make decent potions and such, and yet there's books that the MC is studying from in the first place (She didn't make any of the potion recipes herself after all)?

So how is it that this assistant kid didn't know about making distilled water, despite having already been an alchemist's apprentice, and having been raised by alchemists too? Yeah, he's a commoner, but he can obviously read and write, and it looks like they have printed books, so there's no reason for them to not be able to get these books too (outside of them being rare and such).

I'm just seeing a whole bunch of random inconsistencies and plot holes for alchemy and alchemists in this story/world. :thonk:

There are probably a lot of things that little girls wouldn't know. But from what we see:
  • The country offers a good price to the best alchemists. Which leaves everybody else with third-rate alchemists and third-rate potions.
  • Even if you can't get really good potions, you still have to work with what you can get. While complaining about alchemists and their unreliable and bitter potions all the way.
  • While books and writing seem widespread (at least among city folk), books on alchemy are rare, with even nobles and kings being able to get only a few.
    • I guess alchemists prefer keeping their knowledge as professional secrets. This problem was eventually solved in real life, with patents and academies of science, but the manga seems to be set in a period when this has not yet happened.
    • It could be that books on alchemy need to be imported from foreign countries, who are more advanced in alchemy.
  • Proper tools for measurement do not exist. I don't think there is even a hourglass to measure the time of alchemical reactions. Thus, the textbooks are unable to provide proper advice - the aspiring alchemist has to measure success by gut feeling (or appraisal skill).
I suspect the last point is the biggest obstacle for alchemy becoming better. Without, at least, thermometers and watches that allow alchemists to replicate each other's successes, alchemy as a discipline can't progress.
