While I like this series, because it's very comfy, I am confused about how the MC receives such praise for essentially following a book's instructions.
Everyone acts like she is the inventor of the potions, and yet clearly others had perfected them before her. I though this chapter would finally have her actually experimenting with a flawed set of instructions, but she just used the equipment and materials as is, and everything worked out, so again the author of the book is the actual MVP here.

This also goes to the premise of the series. Why are alchemists looked down upon when clearly all the important recipes and such for them have already been addressed? Why on earth would there be alchemists who are bad at their job, when they have instructions for perfect potions already written and ready? :thonk:
Didn't she get the book from the King? So, it might actually be an extremely rare book that not many have access to. Or maybe only 1 of it exists. I can't recall if it was mentioned already.
And for the recipe part. As seen with many people cooking, it's not exactly as easy to follow a recipe and not fuck up every once in awhile.
Although, I would like to see her fail sometimes even if she immediately solved it afterwards.

Thanks for the TL

I do recall that it might have been something like that, but that just raises the question of why the hell the information was kept secret or scarce? People obviously rely on alchemists, despite it being seen as a low rung job, so why keep the information that would make them more effective and efficient hidden? :pout:

It kinda feels like she's living on 'easy mode'. Whenever she needs to make something, there's an existing recipe. Whenever she needs an ingredient, it's available. Everything can be dissolved in just boiling water.

The substitutions and theorizing is the interesting part IMO, and there's precisely zero of that...
spending about an hour to make a single potion and if anything went wrong they would be petrified sure easy mode. she had to switch with someone to continue the process.

its possible that they are careless and rather not put in the effort to get a perfect potion or even good quality, she made a garden while other just bought whatever is available, its also likely the books she has are not readily available or very expensive, she is bless by the connections. we would have a totally different story if her father didn't accept her being an alchemist.

Wouldn't there be more complications with un-petrifying Katya's leg? The story says that Katya's leg was petrified several years ago. She is clearly portrayed as a child, and drawn in a way that makes her look not much older than Daisy, at most 10.

However, if this is all true, wouldn't her petrified leg be much shorter than her other leg? Children grow on average 8cm per year. If we assume her lower leg only accounts for a quarter of that growth number, it would still be something 6cm shorter than the other leg, right? Maybe even as much as 10cm (4 inches) shorter, depending on how long "several years" means. Also how does quickly un-petrifying after so long affect blood flow? Will it start growing again? Was it still growing even whilst petrified?

I'm probably thinking too much about this. The world does have magic as well as fantastical ailments and cures so anything could be possible I suppose. A full explanation now would only warrant more explanations for other things in the future. It just seemed a bit incongruent to me.

Because other people don't have her appraisal eyes to know exactly when things are done.

And even with it Daisy still fail a bit at first.

I knew as soon as the merchant in trouble trope popped up that he’d be a super valuable ally for her, with a daughter who’d be her new best friend

Doctors should also have the same access to the books she has right? Feels weird that she's the only one who can synthesize an antidote like that.

I think there’s a mixture of a few different elements here. Her appraisal is considered an incredibly rare skill and without it, she really couldn’t ascertain how effective the potion is or even if she was on the right track with the step she was taking

it also required like 30 minutes to an hour of focused magic casting which seems like something most people in this world can’t do either. I’m guessing MC is uniquely skilled in her magic control which allows her to accomplish Things like that.

Then there’s the actual application of what it says in the book (a very rare and expensive book that she had to get from the king). Based on my reading of it, it seemed like the instructions were very vague so she had rely on what she already knew about alchemy to fill in the blanks. I’m guessing for most doctors, the amount of trial and error involved in the process wouldn’t be worth it, considering the cost of the coil and other ingredients

I just find it odd that they don't spread that information out, given the importance of the job (still, despite it being an apparent low ranked status).
Surely them knowing these important potion recipes is important for the nation? The book itself being rare is hardly an explanation for not making more of the books or spreading the knowledge within, or making a school specialising in that information for apothecaries. :thonk:

I think the issue is you’re assuming that MC is a standard alchemist, when the series has gone above and beyond show that she is insanely gifted and her appraisal skill Lets her skip a lot of trial and error.

So I don’t think the issue is that the book is being boarded, it’d Just be useless for most people. Even mc was seriously confused over a lot of the content, so it’s basically the equivalent of a book written in a dead language. Sure it’s got useful info in it, but it’s useless if nobody can read it

just have to throw this out here but why does the Dad think Katya can't be a merchat with a "missing Leg" , like how is that a big problem when Merchants mainly need to be smart and good with words to facilitate trade?
