I guess the realism ended somewhere inbetween to get a good ending.
Can't complain, though, this story really earned its 8 stars.

@Nimroth It is not as if you can just randomly come up with uses of words just because the specific word doesnt entirely fit into the translation. The word "emperor" is meant for males. You cant just say "man waitress" and you cant say "man hostess" eighter. That word is gender specific! The word "Emperor" is meant for males. 😅
If you want to use it like that, then it means that it is not english! Instead it would be your own, made up, version of english. (like the Nadsat in A Clockwork Orange)
The expression "empress regnant" does suggest that the empress is the actual ruler of the country. In the other cases the empress is just the wife of the Emperor without much political power.
The only case that is might be used like that would be to make it seem ironic, which would be an artistic addition from the translators to the story. It does not seem that way here. It is most likely a mistake, which happens quite often even to the very best of translators! 😀

@Teney Akiko is in no way an empress, as that title would apply to the spouse of the late emperor, and not to his daughter, who is connected to the line of sucession. Furthermore, the way in which she dresses and performs her duties indicate that her role should come before her gender. She acts a regent that happens to be female, not a female that is a regent or ruler. “Girl emperor” may at first sound ironic, but having read the story, you know that it is literally what Akiko is.

You suggest to applying incorrect terms that would cause the reader to imply things that would only be confused later. That common thinking is how certain details are often lost in professional translations. I’d say that adapting language to the best of one’s ability so that majority of implicit information and nuances from the source material is not completely lost or destroyed shows a far better effort at translation.

@Loksel emperor is still wrong translation. it's like calling female Mao a demon King. yeah terms are similar and it's sometimes hard to find equivalent in other language but in that case translators should use lover level of equivalence and replace terms on case by case basis. Regent would be appropriate translation in this case.

Truly appreciate this manga. Not gonna lie, I shed a couple tears towards the end bc it left me with a bittersweet longing of what could have been if they could accomplish her dream of traveling together. Still a 10/10

This manga is a masterclass on how to make a truly great FL, and their relationship really tugs at your heartstrings.
