I would have fired him tbh.
No matter how strong, if he is going to fail on purpose he may as well be a random weak guy that surely doesn't deserve his wage.

He could have refused the job instead of failing on purpose...

@frapco IMO it's cuz Dad thinks they're sending him on useless errands (remember, he thought the Immortal House, or whatever it's called, was a bandit hideout) that happen to have some sort of danger involved. He honestly thinks the Murim folk are all super OP, so he doesn't realize that these guys he's fighting are actually strong - he believes they're fodder, or bandits, or weirdos, and he's more or less had enough of it, even if the pay is "good" (relatively speaking) - he just wants to see his kids, man!

At least, that's my take on it

Too add to what TehSDragon said, if you fire him he will just join the next sect. And they don't want that monster against them.

When does he realize that he's already fighting murim experts? When does he realize that those are not cannon fodder and bandits?
When does he realize that he needs to train the children so they can survive in this world?

Getting tired of the misunderstanding still going.

The best about this is the boss. He knows he got a treasure. Knows when to back off. Wants to use him, but still keeps his position(as a family man) in mind. Thats a good boss. Trying to make full use of his people but still caring for them (at least if they are useful).

Glad boss man understands that he's a dad. He just wants money to raise his kids.

@frapco
actually even back in those days it was alright to fail/abandon a quest/mission if the reality of the task did not align with the original description. they know he is strong so they use him for diffcult and dangerous (for their usual troops) missions. since he was told he would be doing an ordinary letter delivery, obviously not the case, they can get frustrated all they want he actually has the right to refuse fighting and risking his life for it (well he isnt in real danger but still).
