Seems like the author thought African-Americans were allowed into Marine combat units during WWII, which I'm nearly 100% certain weren't. Other than that, I'm okay with the simplified depiction of combat given this manga's art style. The essence of battle & it's effects on the participants is what drives this story.

@Markgraf How were the African-Americans fairing in the Pacific Theater? Any summary how or what they do?

@scripted In the Navy & Marines, African-Americans (referred to as Negro personnel back then) generally served in non-combat support units & positions like cooks, nursing aides, truck drivers, supply handlers, & laundry personnel. The Navy was notorious for manning the majority of the units which handled ammunition handling (always an extremely hazardous duty assignment) to sailors of color. The Port Chicago, CA explosion of the SS E. A. Bryan killed 332 & injured over 1000 more. Out of all African-American casualties in the Pacific Theater, this one incident accounts for 15%.
