I remember reading about a study done that suggested that men generally find women between the ages of 20-23 the most attractive, regardless of how old the guy is. A funny comment on a thread talking about the study said that the only reason why 20-23 year old women were found to be the most attractive is because 16-19 year olds weren't an option to pick.

Rules and laws are tailored to protect the vulnerable and the general citizen.
This is a common misconception, but rules and laws don't actually protect anyone. If someone wants to murder you, they can, even if the law says otherwise. Their only purpose is to give you (or someone else) legal access to revenge. It's the fear of that revenge (the penalty if you get caught) that stops most people from committing crimes, not the law itself.

I know a bunch of people who cross the streets at pedestrian crossings without looking, saying that "according to the law, the cars have to stop". While they're correct, they're the ones who risk dying if they get run over. It doesn't matter what the law says. It doesn't even matter if the driver did it on purpose or not. Once you die, the law becomes meaningless.

It's perfectly fine to naively believe the laws were written with your best interest in mind, but never assume the law is anything more than just words on paper.

Yo why the fuck are people, in the comments of a manga about detectives and the law, so illiterate to the purpose of the laws themselves
I guess its up to interpretation, but who knows

FYI the legal age of adulthood in Japan was lowered to 18 in 2022.

Originally you were considered and adult at 20, and that had been the case since 1876.

Arguably a bigger sort of pinch our main characters have had than when Kuchinashi was kidnapped.

Rules and Laws do protect people, murder is not the only kind of crime in the world, there are laws and rules set in place to compensate things like injury and fraud, there is witness protection, police patrols and the whole schbang.

And the "It's not the law that protects you it's the fear of punishment" argument is pedantic at best, yeah obviously it's the fear of the punishment SET BY LAW that the person's afraid of, Law is a preventive measure, we as a society discourage crime as much as possible so it doesn't happen. And we do that through law.

If you ever have to spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair, do come back to tell me how well that compensation protected you.

As for me, I'd rather preserve human lives with pedantry, than endanger them through negligence.
