Although my opinion has changed a bit having read later chapters, I still don't really think that Kurumi and Nikaidou have very good chemistry together.
I think this is true as well, and even upon reading the first chapter I was like, "This isn't a very healthy way to have a relationship..." But that doesn't mean the relationship has to be doomed. I, myself, have seen seemingly perfect pairings turn out to be nightmares of a relationship and seemingly disastrous relationships turn positive. My own niece that I often worry about fell into a heroin addiction and had an abusive boyfriend, that put her in the hospital multiple times when he got high and drunk and beat her, that supplied her and himself with drugs. (As an aside, the old saying "Some people are only alive because it's illegal to kill them" certainly fits here. I eventually came to terms that not even he was worth going to prison for and that, really, he's suffering more being alive. And I want him to suffer. Alas, as far as I know, he's still alive - still shooting smack into his veins. May his self-imposed personal hell be long and miserable.) So he she broke up with him, for real and for good, I was real happy. Then I heard she was dating an older guy that was an ex-felon and seemed like bad news. Well, I think I was right to worry, but the guy has been a very positive influence on her. She's been clean and sober for about a year and a half now and seems to be in a much happier and better place. Of course, being my niece, I worry about her and her new boyfriend but... She seems happy and better off with him. Time, of course, will tell but it seems like a very disastrous and unhealthy relationship was the complete opposite.
So, things like this can work. But, they are rare and difficult.
Also, while I think that Kurumi is the kind of person who is really understanding and would be supportive if Nikaidou ended up with Jun, I was honestly referring to Kyouko and Kurumi. Looking back, I was pretty vague, so that's my bad.
Oh shit! My bad. When you mentioned childhood friend I just immediately thought of the guy because Kyouko hadn't made any progress in that direction. But, yeah, that would be a nice "compromise." Although, it's really puzzling that Kurumi was searching for a girl to love and love her back and... Kyouko never took the opportunity. I mean, they're both lesbians. The worst Kurumi could say is, "I think of you too much as a friend." And it's more likely, pre-Nikaidou anyways, that she'd eagerly accept considering she already cares for Kyouko, albeit as a friend and not a lover.
