I'm guessing the author used the Japanese name Daishakuten instead of the Chinese name to make it easier for Japanese readers- it's also possible she didn't realize the Chinese name was different.
It makes sense that a Chinese merchant would be moved by a story of filial piety. One of the best known Confucian parables of filial piety is Lu Ji hiding oranges for his sick mother (though Lu Ji wasn't born at this point in the story), so this is probably a reference to that.

Woohoo... What's going on with this Yedibel guy? Come to Plinius out of nowhere, all the while Plinius looks like regular dude? If Plinius look somewhat noble, I could guess the motive for Yedibel to approach.
The way I expect it to go should be Plinius try to buy something (or just ask merchants around), merchants point him to someone who could guide him around, and City guide could begin.
In other words, Plinius as a traveler is the one approaching, not the one getting approached to. Welp, different culture I guess...
