the designs were peem in gens 1-4. gen 5 was alright. then the falloff was massive

Tentacool and Tentacruel (the OG jellyfish mon) are also just jellyfish, Kingler and Krabby are just crabs, Sunflora is just a sunflower, Persian is just a cat, etc

even the 'literally just an animal' designs from gens 1-4 (and maybe 5) were transformative and stylized enough to work, and they never felt out of place among other pokemon. meanwhile the newer designs fail to match the charm of previous gens, being either too complicated or too kitschy. the lack of ken sugimori's design input is felt heavily.
