It's actually a clever twist, not a deux ex machina nor plot armor. It was telegraphed earlier in the story and in the anime (i.e. you've already seen her do it). So try to puzzle it out based on what you know.

Remember when they were poisoning water wells to thwart an invading army? One of the girls rushes past soliders and jumps into the well with a bottle of poison. Kaoru catches her by putting her in her item box. i.e. unlike other stories, living things can go in the item box. Kaoru realized this could used as a last ditch method of escape in a no-win situation. So she put herself in her item box. Betting on Celes being able to take her out.

I hope the translations keep on going.. But I'm so bummed with what FUNA did with the story.. Really? 70 years later?!

If it's any help considering this manga hasn't updated in a long time and I have read some of the Raws. I will summarized what has happen.

From up to chapters 12-20 MC and her best friend explores the world. MC is going through places that she already been through to see what changed. Finding pretty much preserved monuments of things the orphanage and herself had built, really hard but touching moment that the things they built lasted over 70 years in good condition.
She then finds one of the orphan kids still alive and built a live for himself as a store owner, the kid in question was the leader I believe?
MC also comes across either the grand daughter or great grand daughter of that one Noble lady who could speak with and control animals. That is it for up to chp 20 of the raw.
