Or does it have to do with the marriage contract relieving Kian of certain obligations to Motia. So he will argue that it disqualifies Kian?

a plot point is that though Kian was knighted (by Priscilla's dad I think) he refused to pledge allegiance and loyalty to anyone

when a knight gets knighted they are supposed to pledge to the person who knighted them

so Nopok is trying to get Kian out of the duel
