I have made it through more than half the story so I think I have a right to criticize it now. This isn’t that good of a story and it is way overhyped. From Pyo to the old man, everyone is shitty and it is hard to root for them.
At first, I thought this would be like My Kingdom. The MC goes through shit but after something traumatic he begins his revenge and slowly takes from the people who caused him pain. Nope, Pyo has been sidelined to just a fuckboy who won’t get with his main chick. He has been in limbo since he went to college.
The old man has done everything with impunity. He has never suffered since Pyo beat his ass. Even if he has dementia now, he is still causing others to suffer. Regardless of whether he dies sooner or later, the damage will be catastrophic for everyone surrounding him. Simply killing him isn’t enough at this point, just as the victims he has raped, he should suffer a similar fate. Death is too kind.
Dali is still a toss up for me. On one hand, she is a terrible person. On the other, she has more dignity than anyone in this story. Even with Pyo trying to control her, she has never truly swayed from who she is. If the author hadn’t made her so fixated on Pyo she would be a really great character. Alas, every action she takes revolves around Pyo. True to her character, sure, but she could be much more.
And now my biggest issue with this story. This is coming from someone who isn’t affected by rape in stories usually. Somehow, this series has made me side with feminist regarding rape in fiction. In fact, this story could very well be a prime example of the glorification of rape. Pyo’s mom enjoying being raped was ghastly. That was the first offense for me. Then, the failed attempts to gangrape Dali, Heomin, and Hyemin. I couldn’t help but think that this author had a rape fetish. That was the second offense. Then, Hyuna, Heomin, her sister, the poor Mom’s being taken advantage of by the old man, and now Pyo’s mom AGAIN. I mean, WHAT THE FUCK. These poor women are fodder to the author, toys to be raped. And for some reason this author insists on making Pyo’s mom the main barer of sexual violence. I hate it with all my heart. It is frankly distasteful and unrealistic. I understand that a lot of power dynamics are at play, but for this to go on for so long without true punishment (save for that loser Glasses beat up) is honestly making me sick. This was the final offense.
We have been watching and waiting for the moment that Pyo or someone takes a stand against the Yoo family in a meaningful way. But all we get is more suffering and despair. I understand that is suppose to be “realistic” but this is fiction for a reason. I want justice at this point. I need someone who will fight back even if the odds are against them. I am tired of seeing people suffer because of this shitty landlord family and gangsters. There are truly no heroes in this story.
