Another part is it's a Paul Verhoeven film, which means 99% of the people that watch it just take everything at face value and ignore the satire.
True that people don't usually have the media literacy to "get it." Few people read Derrida or Marx.

But I think those are two different things. in the 90's media consumers didn't drive controversy so much as media producers. This was before twitter. All the rage about Showgirls was from watching Patrick Buchanan types (a literal Christian Fascist) complain about it on the news.

As far as critical opinions of the time, here's Siskel and Ebert: so full of their internal misogyny and Hollywood expectations that they can't see the implication of the opposite in the obvious. Duh guys, it's satire! It's supposed to be that way!

man i really wanted senpai to be a new main stay character for our boy to finally have another male friend to talk about movies with. That being said this marks a turning point for r15 for me. It was a weekly rom com manga that seemed to center around movies that i looked foward to but with ena being recontextualized in these last two chapters it reminds me of freiren vibes where no character lacks depth or motivation. Seeing hints of greatness

A LOOOOT of people are gonna be disappointed with the outcome of this arc.
As for always lol.

Let's be fucking real, manga authors rarely have the balls to actually give consequences to their characters anyway. The amount of bullshit that a literal shitstain of a human being can get away just because they are cute or whatever is mind boggling. And even more dissapointing is that sometimes they would even attempted to redeem them with a 3-cent plot that is probably created by shitting a big fat turd onto the keyboard and hit send

Fuck me up fam, if you please.
I just hope that Ena stops hanging around the sexual predator now that she realised he was never her friend...

exactly. another guy said there's even some revenge plot bullshit coming up in the future. and just looking at the raws, the mommy's past arc seems to drag on for quite a while as well. like i'm here for the film club's members ffs. and not the same dumb re-used stories or whatever else to explain why they join. just have them join normally cause they're interested in films lol
dunno if they watched too many korean dramas that are apparently popular in japan or whatever the fuck. going the same uninspired and boring route as many other "harem" manga is just not it. was a really great and relaxed experience up until this point. damn shame.
seriously contemplating if i should drop this just like the other guy did.
Mommy's arc being left out is kinda criminal ngl, basically why the manga's plot began in the first place.

Ironic it became this stupid harem considering the movies re's referencing, hes gotta have better ideas than him right?

There's not much to say. Simply nothing happens to Umeki and his club.

After Fuyumine finds out what's happening he goes to his club and gives him a big talking down to, telling Umeki that if he so desperately wants this vision for his film, he as the director should be the one stepping forward and putting himself out there first instead of forcing others to do it for him. If he can't do that then he has no right to ask Ena to. (note he focused on the movie aspect for his argument because Umeki only cares about movies so focusing on Ena's suffering wouldn't have gotten through to him)

And that's it. They never get reported and Ena never has to get naked on camera. She subsequently leaves the club to be with our main cast, which you can probably guess later leads to a love triangle.

Later on we find out Umeki took Fuyumine's words to heart and is now crossdressing to play the female roles in his movies, as he believes he's the only one capable of making his vision come true.

He even has a somewhat amicable rivalry with Fuyumine during the cultural festival where they compete to see who gets the most visits.

So yeah, despite how poorly they treated Ena nothing bad at all happens to them, they just get redeemed.

Why am I not surprised.
I have low expectations but of course she's expected to fail, and if even it's considered interesting, he will fail her.

I mean I get where you coming from but after reading about Junko Furuta yesterday... I'm kind of having a hard time dismissing this shitbag guy as cartoonish.
No, that's still dumb, what does Junko Furuta have to do with all this? This was the case of local gangsta boy and his band kidnapping, raping and torturing a girl that refused him, meanwhile his band raped few other women as well before they got caught. What does it has to do with normal high-school girl? Are you gonna use Homolka couple as a standard risk for Canadian high-schoolers? Why not mention Zodiac killer to anywhere who says they want to move to Callifornia? Does Kitty Genovese murder means you can't call for help in USA? Every country has an infamous crime that moved the public opinion. You have to do better then just mention one of those like it's a valid argument in itself.

Simply means that shitbags exist and that I can't completely see this guy as cartoonish as he can be an outlier. I mean would you say Hannibal Lecter is a cartoonish character simply because people like him are not the norm?

I mean yeah this case is pretty different from Junko Furuta's, this guy ain't nearly as bad as them which in turn makes it more believable, less cartoonish. Of course you can't expect every or any japanese teenagers to be like those guys or this guy, however it does mean that whenever someone starts behaving like them it's not completely unbelievable and as such harder to consider cartoonish or exaggerated.

Admittedly author doing this kind of thing just as an excuse to get Ena to fall for MC is kind of lazy, but I wouldn't call that guy cartoonishly evil. Also while the concept is not particularly original I believe it has potential to become meaningful in the context of R15+ movies as this guy seems to care mostly about the "unpleasant" side of them, and I think the execution wasn't that lazy even if the concept aint original.

Oh okay, it's good that she realize that he's just using her and not delude herself that she's anything more to them.
