I understand that he wanted to be thorough but I think the Heat Ray should go first. Dude set our FMC up for failure by starting with the conditions that were least conducive to transformation. If it were me, I would try to 100% recreate the conditions that cause transformation, then slowly deviate from those conditions until FMC can transform anywhere, anytime.

Science doesn't have to be cruel.

As expected. I wonder if they will try and let these guys get away with it or try and pass it off. I have my doubts that we will see actual consequences towards these guys and our girls will get punished. Fingers crossed that I’m wrong.

Thank god Duskin and Hazuki both want to fight for Sumire, getting tortured like that is insane, definitely explains why Duskin was so shook before, also Duskin seems to have some sort of history with a much younger Sumire

Also Hazuki's conversation with the Captain seems to imply she was super troublesome in the past, I wonder when we'll learn more about that

We already knew Sumire's mother sucked but trying to strangle her to death sure is a grim flashback, I wonder who was behind her mother before the flashback ended?

So Duskin is actually Sumire's younger brother turned into a vermin or a vermin that uses her younger brother as the basis of its personality? I did think it was a bit weird how Sumire said she's financially supporting her younger brother but we've never once seen her actually talk to him, just a money transfer to her mom

I was thinking the flashback meant the alien had been inside her from childhood as her friend (smiling young sumire, and aliens in ch1 accidentally awakened it while planning to do body horror) but ur theory makes more sense

Tbf, if she doesn't transform with the heat ray... she's just dead. Nothing really you can test after that. The pain leading up to it was just starting small. Painful but, so far non-lethal.

Two interesting revelations this chapter:
  • Duskin: when he appears in c1, he has no memory, but murders humans out of instinct ("It's like a whisper in the back of my head. Tellin' me to murder all these humans."). But now he hears a more explicit voice that straight-up tells him that murdering Sumire is not what he's meant to do. Plus he remembers Sumire as a happy smiling child, which is incompatible with the official story whereby Sumire is the first UFO victim in 35 years, and hence Duskin shouldn't know anything about her past.
  • Sumire: when her mother strangles her (did we know about that?), you see a child in a striped T-shirt point at Sumire. Firstly, is this child supposed to be Sumire's younger brother? According to c1p53, the brother is way younger than Sumire, so maybe not? And secondly, is this child commanding Sumire's mother to kill her? If so, why?

On rereading, I expect Sumire's transformation condition is going to be (as per c2p~49) that she can only transform to "protect the things that matter" to her, like when her little brother or Hazuki were in danger.
It's fairly obvious that she will only ever transform to protect other people. It doesn't matter to anyone if she dies here, so she doesn't feel the same urge.
