I should probably elaborate as "sunset" is kind of a catch all across cultures, and everyone kind of views it different. The below is how I've come to understand it based on my own upbringing, and your mileage may vary.

An analogy is how the West views the transition from school to work. In the West, it's an opportunity and nostalgia is mostly for a time when no responsibilities existed. In Asia, especially Southeast Asia that transition is a hard line. You're an adult now, and you have responsibilities to your family, your community, and yourself. In that order. What was 'fun' before and after that line are no longer compatible. Manga and anime idealizes this period before one enters the nameless and faceless workforce.

Now take that title. Aki's looking at a few options, all equally bad. He comes to terms that his understanding of lust/desire/love is that of an observer. He experiences it, knowing that crossing that line will end the interaction. He never experiences it and learns that his chances for the passionate interaction with another person won't be an option anymore. Aki's right on the cusp of "sunset" and there's no avoiding it.

In the West, life's sunset is to enjoy a life lived and entering that phase of your "golden years". In SE Asia, life's sunset is a reminder that the end is here and entering that phase of life is a quiet acceptance of the reality that it's over. While philosophical differences exist mainly split by optimist/pessimist lines, sunsets and the season winter offer a subtext of finality that I think the West's analogies lack.
