Looks like it. i think that those in the forest were looking to find a treatment for mercury poisoning and probably the village lasted this long because their treatments were put into the village water which mitigated the effects of the mercury. With the "medicine" the doctor was giving out as either a placebo or just something able to mitigate the symptoms. this would also make it seem like this village is where they could find a suitable candidate for their goal as the longer people last it would likely make it appear that they have some resistance.

Happy that our knight leader didn't kill all those people. Even though this series is good about having people who have done heinous things redeem themselves, that would be a hard one to come back from... assuming he comes back at all.

I really like Kage narrating his actions near the end. It has a very "children's book" feeling. The weird balance between that sort of energy/presentation and the strange, horrific events of the series is a big part of what makes it feel so special for me.
