They swapped physical appearances. The way Futaba tells it. Nodoka wanted to be like Mai so badly, she literally willed her body into that form and, to be consistent with the idea that only one version of a person can exist in one place, Mai was forced to assume her hair-sister's physicality. Neither is particularly pleased about the way it turns out.
