I had the same reaction but I think it was hinted that they wouldn't be able to sync their schedules so they gave up, or something along those lines.

Phones, the internet and the weekend exist. It would have made sense if it was set in the Edo period or something and they had to move far away, but this is just dumb.
I guess it was axed and the author had to wrap it up quickly.
