Oh snap, Tokiwa was the wildcard that tipped the scales over in Aoba's favour! I wonder if we'll see Kenshin's reaction to this, especially since, even though he did try to advertise it, he had been favoured for it by the Boost boss so I wonder if he wouldn't feel betrayed.

Now I really do wonder what kind of fight Aoba will have against Orima, because he's been shown to be really dominating. I wonder what the plan will be in order to have a fighting chance.

This really shows the problem with a person like Kenshin. Just he’s a rising star or even a sun that outclasses many but what happens when he reaches the peak how can those around him challenge him when shines so brightly. Sure he will continue to win but that gets boring. So people would favor an underdog/ unexpected element in this situation

Say what you will about heels and manufactured drama in blood sports being dull or cringeworthy. The fact is that Tokiwa is a master of playing The Heel and antagonizing the public so he gets big fights. He masterfully toyed with Tanashiro's fears and got his boy Aoba that fight!

I'm still uncertain whether Orima will actually win this but I have a sinking suspicion that Aoba will need to recover for a while after this before fighting Kenshin. I have zero doubt that Kenshin wouldn't have OHKO'd Orima simply because Orima is arguably better and equally talented.

100% gonna be an upset now because of plot armor. (1/2jk)

It would be really funny if it happened though, absolutely no one would be happy, everyone who isnt part of the mma group is gonna be fuming and the crowd is gonna hype up kenshin to avenge/beat the heel. It'd be even funnier if he wins after that upturning everyone's expectations and plans including the UFG's

It’s probably precisely that exact reason Aoba hates Kenshin

He’s the type of mentor character that isn’t that great at teaching people how to fight but man is he amazing at showing how to work a rigged system

From a META perspective I agree but if this were real life? SO MANY people would gamble real money on Kenshin getting the knockout finish. That fear is very real when you have a prospect like him so it makes our man playing mind games with baldy all the more believable

yeah if Kenshin wasn’t a nepo babey SO MANY PEOPLE WOULD DUCK EM

And even more promoters and judges would screw him over. But since he is “Japan’s son” he gets benefits

This fight announcement really makes it feel like the manga is about to conclude. What was the point of all the other uncrowned kings, basically the top 5 guys in the division, or prospects like Hachiya, if they’re just going to end up as NPCs?

And honestly, this will be a controversial take, but the last 50 chapters or so have made Tokiwa look like a pretty bad coach/manager. If you’ve got a young, talented prospect like Aoba, just do Nurmagomedov's father's plan: give him good stylistic matchups, gradually increase opposition, and by 25-27, he's gonna smash anyone and make a lot of money.

Instead, Tokiwa keeps rushing him. The early pro debut was already risky, but now it feels like there’s a real chance Aoba takes too much damage or gets mentally broken, preventing him from reaching full potential. We’ve seen this kind of “too soon” thing happen, look at Shungo Oyam, Brandon Thatch, or Michael Grant in boxing.
Moreover, Tokiwa doesn’t even seem to be doing most of the coaching himself; he keeps outsourcing so much of Aoba’s training to others. I don’t know if that’s intentional on the author’s part, but it makes Tokiwa come off as way less competent than I think the story wants him to seem. Basically, a tale of an athlete who is too talented to be a good coach.

Unless, of course, Aoba just gets new plot armor and wins anyway, which is not unlikely.
