Our mc is a weird loser, sure, but he hates pretense. Meat Man here is definitely taking the right steps in my opinion, he was taken advantage of, now he's trying to better himself so it doesn't happen again.
But there's a potential future where he made a friend who liked him for who he was, a nice guy who liked to treat his friends.
