@Eiry Because he doesn't want to meet any humans. He even cursed his own eyes so that he would see humans through a blur filter. If he just dropped her in a random village, without making sure someone would take care of her, it might spell doom for her just as well as the wilderness. In the worst case some sicko would snatch her. Getting eaten by a bear would be more merciful.
