I'm not asking for something rivaling classic literature, all I want is some more basic characterization to give me a reason to care.

Personally, I find erotica to be much more appealing when I know the characters who are involved, rather than just some faces to forget about five minutes later.
It's the entire reason why porn of established series is so popular, because there is a pre-existing connection between characters and reader. It's also what divides good erotica from the rest.

Hmm, there's a couple of differences off the bat:
-the hairstyle - not that it couldn't change later on.
-the forehead gem.
-ears. That design is often used for demi-humans, like the half-elves, dwarfs, demons, lamias... Paula's haven't been shown - at least not yet.

Likely not Zulu, but I think the bottom-left girl could pass for her with shorter hair, plus without the hairband and ahoge.
Top-right looks to be a dark elf.
Bottom-right girl is Suzu.

It's been lingering in the back of my mind why these 4 are here and highlighted, and not the 4 Heavenly Kings(Mary, Marl, Alice, and Fine) instead. Heck, there's 3 other ladies in the back, and one of them is Zayd(on the right).

They are the original design for the 4 heavenly kings. The artist changed it later on to the current version. However, he did reuse the design
