Why am I supposed to be rooting for him though? He attacked these people on sight. He's shown not even a single reason to hope he succeeds.

It is hard to root for this MC.

But instead of being a generic altruistic guy, he's looking out for number 1. Something no sane person should take for granted in an unknown world in an unknown culture.

In a trope scenario, he would've squared off against some unpopular brute that's begrudingly accepted by the village, and upon his death, the village would be happy for having been rid of a nuisance. The author avoids this trope by making the MC fight against someone who has the support and trust of everyone in the village, has the smarts to understand the MC's nature as a risky unknown. The champion's loss resulted in grief and suspicion instead of fanfare.

Isn't injustice enough to root for a MC? The guy was put into a bad situation by the goddess, and is constantly faced with distrust that immediately paints him as the bad guy. He's definitely no hero, but that's not necessary to make him a sympathetic character. I want to see him deal out justice by whooping ass.
