Damn, they're pullin' some scary grimy stuff to take on the beasts. I feel like paying witches a living wage is an easier way to go.

You know, instead of publicly executing them.

Why has this become a different story suddenly? Like what kind of sense is it to have a big event take place in the story and then suddenly we are seeing a battle at some holy city with people we don't know and getting more villains(?) when the whole thing with his siblings, the witches, and the nobles, and all that shit is still going on. It's too busy. There is too much shit going on at one time that important parts are suffering with a lack of focus.

@Eridian

It's almost like everybody native to this world who has even a modicum of power are assholes because that's the type of person you have to be in this world to thrive.

@Eridian in the novel the autor write diferents points of view for the same event in this case present the church fighting the months of demon, and the strike to the church is more heavy, an is becuase a very importan reason

Probably because a story is more than its main character? It has a world to it, where other events are happening, and we should see these other important plot points instead of writing everyone except the MC off as an unimportant NPC with no screen time, and only hearing about big events during mid-combat exposition or something equally fucking retarded?

The church is obviously a major antagonist considering they're the ones that advocate for the burning of witches. Gotta set them up. The story is more than just "Roland beats his siblings and wins".

@Kayriel that's fine but that isn't what they are doing. We have his siblings and what they are/could be doing right now, have the main story itself, we have whatever the nobles and that fort are doing or planning, we have whatever the witches are doing right now, plus all the various things the MC is going through as well. It seems to me that having more than 5 different central plot points all going on at the same time is a bad idea. Because as i said it's too busy. How can we care or even remember the plot point with the nobles and that fortress if we have not even mentioned them for god knows how many chapters now, and in the mean time are filling up with more events happening at once, more characters to remember, more new villains "btw how many does that make now? We got the corrupt church, his siblings, the witches, that fortess, the demons, and any number of nobles out there". The pacing is a complete mess now.

@sircusa your right, they are. But they are pacing it too fast. Just as soon as one plot thread starts another one pops up 1 to 2 chapters later. It's like oh his siblings are the bad guys, no wait it's the people at the fortress too, no wait demons, that's right there are demons, NO WAIT there are evil witches too, OH hold on there are evil people in a church scheming things too, no WAIT! you get it right? Like the story is on cocaine or something. There is something to be said for a slow burn and setting things up properly rather than rushing from event to event and more and more new enemies before old ones are even taken care of.

Well their evil ways as you say, they do have a reason to do what they do, although they've somewhat lost their way regarding that. If you want a surprise (that doesn't really spoil the story much) -
The first several popes where witches.
And as for what they're doing, you got a good clue in this chapter. If you really want to spoil yourself -
God's Punishment Warriors - basically empty soul-less shells created through mixing a witches blood and a God's punishment stone, then pumping it into a person. 1 witch sacrificed can make 2 of these powerful warriors. Although they sometimes die instead.

They're building them to fight the "Demon Race" in "The Battle of Divine Will." In other words they're trying to save humanity itself from annihilation. Your average church member of course doesn't know any of this.

They're still villains, but there is a shade of grey here. Which of course makes for better villains. "I'm evil for the sake of being evil" is rarely very interesting.

@bk3k

Thanks for the explaination. Made the church look a bit more "good" in a sense compared to other stories.

@CoolOtamegane I would say this is true for the top leadership of any church. You have to literally shut off all logic and reason to be a high follower. A core rule of pretty much every religion is "Don't Kill" but all throughout history the highest leaders of religions consider this rule to be optional and convince their followers god kinda revoked the rule if you roll out on a holy war.

@eridian I think at this early part of the story, the story is still fairly organized. In the middle of the WN, the author liked to have up to a dozen subplots going on at the same time, continually jumping between them. It's something readers will have to get used to. Maybe the manga will try to simplify the messiness.

We need a good chuch. Even if it has a couple of corrupted members, a church that in general works for good. Not the greater good that implies sacrificing virgins. But the broader good.
Thanks for the chapter.
