To answer a few questions. Clarifications rather than real spoilers, but I'll use a tag anyhow.
1. "the bite" is yearly based off of when they initially awakened as witches.
2. "Coming of age" happens when they turn 18 and is similar to "the bite" but stronger. At this time they might develop power specializations like Anna's Green Fire if they're lucky.
Both events are often fatal especially the latter. Although they now know how to avoid the negative effects.
The "demons" have a tank with red mist in it. They need this to live. The tube obviously connects from the tank to their breathing masks. These guys also are using skulls from demonic beasts. Furthermore they don't carry those spears. They generate them. Doing it too often takes a lot out of them.
This really isn't showing how bad that massacre was. IIRC there where like 44 witches, most of then dead. The demons where pretty efficient and merciless. Only a handful of those witches had powers which are suitable for combat and thus they where basically defenseless. I get not wanting to draw that many. Also I'd say the desperation of their journey to that point was downplayed, as well as Carla's zealotry. This part was really sad. The only silver lining was Carla getting killed finally. A shame she had to drag so many others to death with her.
