I'm intrigued by the divorce; the ex-wife's claims about him in that divorce document do not really square up with the image we're being presented in this chapter. Was there an ulterior motive? Or a freak set of circumstantial misunderstandings that spiraled hard?
Him being so alienated from everyone around him does him no favors of course, and preconceived notions are hell--especially in a place like Japan that cares so much about image and social acceptability.

The setup from there is neat, though. Reuniting with a childhood friend with clear (to the reader) lingering attachment and desire means that he's got an obvious point of happiness on the proverbial horizon. I'm assuming that this will be more mature and less overt comedy (also going by the tags used on MD for further reference), which tells me the divorce proceedings will play a significant role in the story, as they are firmly attached to his character and will require resolution for him to move forward and complete his own arc.

The most sus is that she forbad him from talking to her friends and family. Likely she’s lying to her family and friends, or her family and friends might be in on it and afraid of them for burping out the truth.

I get the feeling ex-wife will pop up to reactivate his trauma only for fmc to tell her to fuck off. Ex will do the smug "I don't know what he told you but" thing and get shut down again.

I hope we just get house fixing and people trying to get to know him as he breaks out of her shell thanks to fmc. Minimal drama please.

Realistically, yeah you'd be depressed. Imagine for a moment where everyone in your life is scared of you, and then you wife, the person who is supposed to love you no matter what, accuses you of that. I remember when someone first said something like that to me and called me weird and a creep it ruined my mental state for a few months, you really do think those things. wooden flooring in washroom is actually pretty bad, I think they did waterproof maybe cause without it, it just can't be there for even a week or maybe we might see it getting moldy later in story which they fix but I don't think that would happen

This made me look up whether domestic violence was a crime in Japan or not because it's real strange to see a divorce order for DV and no criminal charges. Apparently it has been rising for the last 22 years and the majority of victims are in their 20s or younger. One study found that by age 49 19% of women who have had partners would experience it.

Maybe the translator can chime in here but were there any additional details about the divorce in the paper? I assume this isn't a Divorce by Agreement because it would be insane for anybody to be accused of domestic violence that they did not commit and went "yeah i'll just accept that as my reputation from here on out." If it wasn't by agreement then it would enter the court system where a judge should've been involved for either Mediation or Judgment. That should mean there would be a standard of evidence required for this to be labeled as domestic violence. Japanese court uses a higher standard than preponderance of the evidence that US civil court uses. That should mean that one vague record of him raising his voice one time should not be enough to pass the bar.

It's not a fine, a divorce is a civil case. What she was demanding was compensation for supposed damages to her health, wellbeing etc. If he was unwilling to pay then losing the trial was the only way to obligate him to. Though given this guy's issues, I wouldn't be surprised if he just agreed and settled out of court.
