I'm still enjoying the fact that the story focuses so much on the rival character that's usually doomed to exist as a foil for the protagonist and be perfectly hateable and perfectly bland.

That aside, wow, that's scientific method for you! TL note expanding on the events from the novel was extremely helpful, too!

My theory is that the story is correcting the world. They can't have a brutal murder happen in this world that would ruin the plot. So the people are alive, but are given a new job to fulfil that requires them leaving.
