@fucknvampire He vanished leaving no trace of himself as being the one that defeated the Demon Lord. General population would have just seen the four coming back sans him(and probably didn't listen to the four when they tried to say something different...remember, he was a feared and hated "Amber Eyes"). Like it said, he faded into myth and legend...and even more afterward with nothing really concrete to show he existed. (The book existed...but I doubt Maria would have let just anyone see it as it was important to her...hell, did he even put his own name on the book or leave it anonymous?)...then there was the case where all old books pertaining to magic were burned...those probably eliminated more references to him from the public consciousness. Remember, he became the "Lost Fifth Hero" that no one knew about...
