It's painful. But within the metaphysics of the story there is personal existence after the death of the body, and perhaps the two could someday be reunited. (Quite awkward though, if one has remained a child while the other has become an adult.)

I didn't see that coming, I thought she was a crazy person who killed girls who took the bus, that's why the "NO!" to go to the lake where she would hide the corpses or we would have a happy ending where she was cured of her illness, but she left us something painfully beautiful. This is the magic of those little works that don't need to be long to move you.
