Fun fact: In French, yes we use "si", but "so" is also changed to "sol".

Same in Russia, with "l" in "sol" palatized (which makes it homonymic to "salt").

Blame the English for that one. "We can't have two note names starting with the same letter. That's madness!"

Another explanation i've seen is that "ti" was used to avoid mixing it up with the "C" ("do") note in alphabetic notation.
